Sweet and sour is a generic term that encompasses many styles of sauce, cuisine and cooking methods. It is commonly used in China, it has been used in England since the Middle Ages, and remains popular in Europe and in the Americas.
INGREDIENTS
- 500g pork, cut into small pieces
- 2 medium sized red bell pepper, diced
- 2 medium sized green bell pepper, diced
- 1/2 cup spring onion, chopped
- 1/2 inch ginger, sliced
- 2 pcs hot chili pepper
- 1 medium sized onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 pcs star anise
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 3 tbsp cooking oil
PROCEDURE
- In a saucepan combine vinegar, soy sauce, star anise, hot chili pepper, sugar and half of the ginger and bring to a boil until sugar dissolved. Set aside.
- Place the oil in a pan then heat-up. Fry the pork until cooked, about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Add salt.
- Separate the pork from the oil. Set aside.
- In the same pan, saute the garlic, onion and the remaining ginger for about 3 minutes.
- Add the fried pork and stir fry for about 2 minutes.
- Add the red and green bell peppers and mix.
- Pour-in the soy sauce mixture and mix well.
- Season with ground black pepper.
- Lastly, add the chopped spring onion and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
